I tried alot of different ways, but what finally got me on the right track was to use Page Four, which is kind of like Scrivener for Mac users, to break apart the entire fic by chapters, then I went through each one and colored in red all the ones I thought I could get rid of. After that, I started to rebuild the fic a chapter at a time. Scenes that had important things in them but were ridiculously long got pulled out and rewritten and then put in the finished part...absolutely INSANE method, but I knew the major storyline, which of the minor storylines I wanted to keep, and killed the rest. Still have 4-5 scenes I need to rewrite.
I also realized I had no choice but to entirely change one of the character's behavior. I didn't like it. So he's going through a total redo, which means major reworking of his pov... LOL! INSANE.
I so don't recommend this method, but it has been really interesting to pull apart a story and rebuild it. Whew!
