Walking on the Wildside with my "Timberwolves"

So. I learned tonight that not only are huskies incredibly beautiful and loving, but they also have ridiculous hearing. I wanted to go for a walk because both Maddox and I were antsy. It was still a little warm out for a walk (81 degrees) but thought just a real quick walk would be okay.

Shelby was fast asleep in my room on her pillow. I snuck out of the bedroom, shooing Maddox out ahead of me.

Two seconds after I clipped Maddox's Halti on (as shown in user pic--it is not a muzzle, more a bridle for dogs or, well, a halter) the wildest caterwauling issued forth from my bedroom! Shelby knew EXACTLY what was going on! Never mind that they had not been taken for a walk since Nick was here last fall! SHE KNEW!!!

Defeated, I decided oh well okay, I will give it a try. Walking one husky is quite the feat (just getting them out the door, they are so eager to run run run run sled or no sled) but TWO? I'd already suffered from a wrenched shoulder once! I sure didn't want that again--I was in agony, ended up twice at a chiro's and a one hour massage that finally saved my sanity.

Anyway, I have to say that I was rather amazed at how well they did. Shelby settled down really quickly, just Doofus boy Maddox was bouncing all over. Typical male.

I managed to take some pictures on our adventure--and it was definitely an adventure. These two are very sweet dogs but they have high prey drives, so the four or so rabbits we saw? Yeah. There's a reason each dog wears two leashes and two collars. I couldn't find Shelby's nice leashes so had to break out two cheapies. Colorful, but not very good. I'll get her a harness and find that other Halti asap as I want to do this soon.

We had to take a different route tonight because of an evil yappatizer barring our path. It was a little white poodle that was ready to tear my two apart. So we took a different route, chased halfway down the street by that thing. On the way, one guy said, "Hey! Are those timberwolves?" Most people do think they are wolves. Geesh. These creampuffs? Snort.

"Finally she takes us out walking, but then she makes us stop and pose?"

Tails in motion. (they bounce as they walk and I just love them) Not far from here we ran into some kids who had a pit bull. She had a pink collar on and wanted to PLAY and was quite distressed my two ignored her. She was not worthy, of course. Only other Siberians are...and this breed really does buddy up with their own kind. Snobs.

Thanks to the detour, we ran out of sidewalk. This is Shelby looking for a rabbit snack, but this meadow was full of those evil arrow-head things that you torment each other with when kids, ouch! All in my socks!

Always, always, looking for rabbits. Always. After this, we scared a guy (not his girlfriend) off the sidewalk, three kids asked if they would bite (no of course not), and I picked up two other kids who had been playing basketball and they walked part of the way with me, and we talked dogs. These two always are conversation starters. Alot of the kids we run across in my neighborhood are afraid of them, but then these two boys? No problem. They shared their water, they got smothered by Maddox kisses (really wanted to take a picture but didn't think it appropriate) and even Shelby gave a slurp or two. She tired of them quickly--I have a tiny edge of not trusting her even now--so we walked on. I answered LOTS of questions and of course they wanted to know would we have puppies? (NO!)

Shelby is Nick's baby girl. She tuckers out alot faster than Maddox does. By the time we were headed for home, she was walking beside me, leashes completely loose. She was ready for her bowl of water! Maddox would've kept on, but I was worried about Shelby.

One last one of Shelby, recovering.

Have to say, the walk was a success. I just wish there was a way to get them water partway through, and that it wasn't so blasted warm in the evenings. Sucks, but having Huskies in Texas will always be hard on them. They sure are peaceful now! Ahhh!!!!

Doggies!!!! I want to hug them and give them loving. Even if they would diss my dogs. ;P
I have a fold-up dog water bowl that I can clip to Milo's leash (Piper's leash has the doggie poop bag carrier already). The only thing w/ that is then you have to carry a water bottle or else plan your route to hit a water fountain. We live close enough to water fountains that this is not a big deal for us.
(I love to watch my dogs' tails when we walk, too. They're just so cute!)

One of the boys who joined me on my walk has beagles. I thought of yours when he was telling me about them.

No water fountains around here--just houses--sigh. Once I asked a guy washing his car if he'd water my dogs and he did so gladly. Grin.

o cute CUTE!
my jables always knew when anyone was talking about the "W" word - he even worked out what "the W word" meant after we stopped saying "walk" (b/c he knew that one)
he got all excited and really wanted to go, but half way down the street he'd be tired and just flop in the middle of the road with A Look - 'no, no, i can't go on. leave me and save yourself.'

Awww your collie is so pretty!!! My sister has a blue merle one. She is pretty high strung and sensitive. LOL. Drives Leslie nuts but she loves her to pieces.

[identity profile] kel-reiley.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, they're a sensitive bunch
the strangest things used to freak jake out (hiccups, the kitchen...)

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Fans for Claire (the collie). She freaks at fans and barks madly at them.

[identity profile] kel-reiley.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
o jake loved the fan
he used to plop himself down in front of it, blocking anyone else from getting any air

Carry a water bottle, silly goose. But I feel for you, I can't imagine walking two Lucys at once.

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I know, I just need to get a good one and a collapsing bowl.

[identity profile] ur-xgrlfriend.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Awwww, it's great to see the pups!! Why do you walk with two leashes? And I worry about the heat, too. I took all three of mine for a 3 mile run on the Walky Dog. It was in the lower 60s and warm!! Well, that's warm for here. About as warm as it gets, actually. lol. Funny thing, all the local huskies have blown their coats. My two Sibes haven't. I think it's because last summer, they were in TN. Their bodies don't think it's hot enough yet.
There's nothing quite as peaceful as tired huskies! I love it!

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
I walk with two leashes because I don't have anything different! I would love to get a tandem walker thingy--but the question is, can one walk in front of the other? LOL. Maddox likes to be out front, and Shelby lags behind after awhile. He is so power-packed that he might just drag Shelby.

Oh Mr. Maddox was ready to go again about 30 minutes later--I still didn't get out of throwing his rope ball! (not that I mind so much, lol).

I would LOVE to tromp around Alaska with Maddox. Heaven! You've been there a year now almost? If you say its two I will freak. LOL.

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh and the two leashes per dog? Paranoia. Maddox--one is the halti, the other his harness. He does better with the halti but I don't trust it--it is not very strong. Shelby--she has a choke chain on that I want to replace with a halti-harness combo like Maddox's but I dont' trust the choke chain (and don't like them much but it is a light one) as it has been known to come off.

Awww, they're gorgeous! Beautiful pair! I love the walker's eye view pics, too. Very cute.

Dogs are so amazing for picking up environmental cues. My three know from the way I get up from my chair whether it's make-a-cup-of-tea time or OMG WALK TIME. It's almost creepy.

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
LOL do you have shadows too? CLaire the springer doesn't so much anymore, but I can't move without Maddox getting up. Shelby--I swear she was fast asleep!

that is freakin' brilliant.

[identity profile] bodlon.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
N'aww. Huskies.

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
FUR MACHINES!!!!

LOL.

Maddox looks forward to slurping your face someday, too.

[identity profile] bodlon.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I will let him! I'll even make happy noises and pet him while he does it! LET THE DOG KISSING BEGIN.

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't even have to ask him. LOL.

Shelby is more refined, she waits for you to ask for them. Not Maddox!

[identity profile] thaddeusfavour.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Lovely doggies! I would love to smooch and hug them!

Cats do not know of the leash. Sometimes, when we're outside in our yard, they will follow us around, or down the street if we walk (which we don't often because I hate walking in Florida). I have been amazed by my kitties and how chummy they can be.

But, I miss having a doggie and yours are beautiful! Thanks for the pics.

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Maddox especially would smooch you right back. He LOVES people. If he wasn't so crazy still (he is only 2) he would make a great therapy dog.

I love cats and miss having them! My last cat was a part Maine Coon, and he was just awesome. 18 lbs. of cat. The redhead sibe would eat a kitty though. Her prey drive is just too well-developed, and she's taught Maddox to chase and kill (sigh) too.
