Post Your Desktop!

So, everyone is posting their desktops. Some are only posting their desktop pics, but I like seeing all the little folders people have.

I have two computers in my room that I bounce between--my laptop, with Vista, and my desktop, with XP. It can be somewhat of a pain to do that,  but that's the way I roll, bouncing between one and the other depending on mood.

(I have yet to truly fall in love with Vista--I find it annoyingly complicated and prefer the simplicity of XP, but I love my laptop, so I deal with it. I barely have that thing's internals organized. I sure hope the next OS is a hell of a lot better than Vista but I'm stuck with it for now at least. Have XP at work too).

Because I am a doofus and don't know how to make the images bigger just by clicking them, and don't want to bother Nick since he is eyeball deep in thesis work, I'll just do it like this:

So here's my laptop: (clicky to see the big view)

And here's my big computer:  (clicky)

We're supposed to say WHY these desktop layouts:

For the laptop (which is named Cyberman lol) the second I saw that photograph of the TARDIS whirling through space, and the Come, Travel with Me I knew that was the perfect thing for me. I love to travel, I LIVE to travel.  My time here in FW is time spent preparing for the next time I can travel.  I love seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, meeting people from all over...oh if only I had more money to do it, that's what I'd do all the time! (well, except I'd worry about my puppies alot...)  I spent my first 43 years of my life hardly moving beyond Texas.  I did manage to get away long enough to see Seattle a couple of times, Washington DC, Tucson, a few other places---all mystery convention-connected.  Not enough. Never enough. I always wanted to go, the spouse always wanted to stay.  He did not like me to go anywhere. I went anyway, when I could, but he always made it difficult.  Kept my wings clipped best he could, but I'm fully-feathered now so when I have the cash, I make the time.  I plan to do more in the coming years. Have to. HAVE to.  So I love this desktop as it is a constant reminder of who I am, what I am now.  FREE!

The icons are nice and neat on my laptop primarily because it is used mostly only for writing and emails and 'net-surfing.  I also, on the sidebar, have a clock for Nick, and his weather, and then the same for myself.  I also have a photo gallery display gadget--and if you squint really really hard you may be able to tell who I captured in this screenshot.  lol.  I like that gadget alot as all my trip pics and pics of Nick and the dogs lol are constantly going past my eyes, making me smile. (Just gotta be sure they are all work-safe, tee hee).

The second one, the big computer? Those are my kids, Tiffany and Kelly. The picture is from a couple of years ago--a friend of Tiff's was learning about photography (she now studies it at uni) and the kids volunteered to be subjects. Or rather, Tiff volunteered them.  I love this picture because, well, its my kids! My amazing awesome wonderful kids!  I am lucky in that my two adore each other. The three of us went through a hell of a lot together during their teen years, and thankfully they've both emerged the stronger for it.  My son is still finding his way--he is a senior in high school--and his father's illness and death were very hard on him, but he is doing well (he IS  a teenage boy though, 17 now, so he doesn't always THINK like his sister, who is 20, does about things, but he is getting there).

The icons on the desktop aren't that exciting, though I laugh that I have the Askworld soundtrack on there.

I like the story for the travel one. (You've reminded me here that I should really do the one on my laptop, too!) And that's a great photo.

I made an icon out of the travel background--and also corrected my horrendous second paragraph. OY! That was a mess so I am glad you understood it anyway. LOL.

Thanks. I do adore those two brats o'mine. :)

I have nothing on my desktop. Literally. I am just using a picture of Sky and Stan swimming because I love watching them together. No icons. I hate them. All my stuff auto-hides too so.... it's a picture. Huge digital picture frame!

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I should take a picture of my work one as I have so many programs and links on there it is ridiculous. I have all my regular, all my work's and all the BNSF ones I access. No way could I have those hide. :)

That picture of your kids is so lovely!

And yay for free wings and going wherever you want to! *hugs*

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*brushes my wings smooth*

I rather like them, too.

My kids like theirs also, though only my daughter is truly aware hers were furled tight before.

Thanks--I am extraordinarily proud of those two--I have pretty kids. My son was going through Emo Hair back then. LOL.

Um ... is your current pic Nick buying some food? On the pic display thing? I had a pic display thing, but it would never display pics from the folder I wanted. It always displayed my motivators or what have you, and I wanted it to do friends and family. I couldn't get it to work! So I deleted it. Also, I had it set up to show Doha's time, but the damn thing just showed where the sun was in relation to Doha instead of the time! I didn't want to bug M, so I just deleted it, too. I like the streamlined look, but I would like to get the pics to show only the pics I want at some point, and then put it back.

Your kids are awesome. :)

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes that is! We were in ASDA in Cardiff. I loved their groceries-the fresh foods were awesome. Just awesome.

Oh! That is irritating you couldn't get it to work. I love mine. For some reason yours wasn't pointing to pictures, huh.

Yes, they are. :) Kelly's changed a bit since then and won't stop growing! I have to buy him new clothes, again!

Doha? Oh! Over there!

I really like both of your desktops!

I would totally do this meme, but my computer skills are sadly lacking...

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL well I finally got the info on how to do the small to big picture. :) But this works. You should learn!

[identity profile] tree00faery.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I should learn, shouldn't I?

But classes start again this week, and I don't have and time... :(

[identity profile] klgrem.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for sharing those. :) I figured the second one was your kids. Nice photo. Black and white has its own charm. :)

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love black and white. They also did a lovely shadow box with four pictures of them--the pictures pinned in place with pearl pins. I love it. This picture is one of them. :)

The DW desktop is lovely but I especially like the photo of your children. My girls are 15 and 11, so it's all heads-together whispering and mad giggling one moment, snark and slamming doors the next. I hope very much they'll adore one another at 20 and 17. :)

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hi, you found me. LOL. Oooo two girls! How fun. I have two sisters and my middle sister and I are very close. Now. Not so much growing up. Pretty sure we were mortal enemies even. Hmmm. Somehow we grew up. LOL!!!!!

Here's mine. I change my desktop pic all the time, but I change my icons less frequently, so right now I try to keep my desktop fitting my black/red/white icon theme. Right now it's one of the desktops that came with Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts album.
I've got a Mac, so most of my stuff is hidden neatly away in the dock. :-)

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Color-coordinated icons. THAT is awesome. Seriously.

I love the pic too. It is moody and dark and gloomy. :)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_leafy/ 2009-08-30 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, both are gorgeous! The first one is really pretty (and I love your story behind that one) and your kids are beautiful. :)

[identity profile] paragraphs.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank you Leafy!!!!

[identity profile] talekyn.livejournal.com 2009-08-31 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason I thought this was an N post, and thought it was cute that he had your kids as wallpaper on a computer ... then I actually READ the post and realized it was you!

[identity profile] misswinterhill.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the Askworld soundtrack too!

I have a Mac, so desktop screenshots are... unfulfilling. I have a variety of weird folder names like "zebras have feelings too" (sheet music); "I need to live forever" (knitting patterns) and "Frankensteine" (stuff I meant to work on with Verasteine) but they're all hidden snugly away. My very clean desktop is a picture of prayer flags with the Himalayas in the background, to remind me that I'm meant to be focussing on one of the Eight Noble Truths each week.

Yeah, that's totally not working.

I like the inclusion of the horsehead nebula in that DW wallpaper. I love the melding of SF with reality. If you ever travel to Australia, I'll at least show you my city (Canberra) and if it's in the school holidays, we can hire a car and go look for more (I must say at this point that ALL the TW people live in Melbourne. And also that all the stuff on the adverts is in QLD. I live in the BORING CITY OF BORINGNESS.)

They keep telling us at work that adolescence now lasts until about age 24. Goddess help us all.
