My laptop died! HP Pavilion v6000 and it just stopped working today. Shut off, went dead, won't reboot. Thank the stars for Harris Amelia, my baby laptop, and having everything either on the external hd, dropbox (which is the best thing ever--why aren't you using it? See, it saved me!) or in emails. And all my pictures are safe too. Whew! But man! Talk about lousy timing--this doth suck.

I will likely have to replace it, according to what I Googled. The problem seems to happen often with this laptop, which sucks. I did get a full 2 years out of it. Think they do that on purpose? I think so.

I won't replace it with a big laptop though, not this time. Back to desktop, as Harris Amelia is a real trooper, and I am quite happy to tote It around with me when I need a laptop. I am just disappointed that this happened now. Evil!

My daughter's new computer is a gorgeous, ridiculously-awesome iMac monster, but I am not going to convert to an iMac...can't afford that, anyway. Ha, can't afford a replacement at all right now! Oh well.

Job hunt chugs along at a slow pace. I've been sending out a few resumes a day, and tomorrow will go get some resumes printed so I can mail those out to different companies. It seems almost futile, sending out resumes like this. But eventually, something has to click, right? Thankfully I am not in dire straits financially...but that isn't that far around the corner, either.

My writer's group is going to meet tomorrow night, and it has been too long since I've bonded, so am looking forward to that, forward to getting out of this house. At least it is beautiful weather here! The huskies have been outside all day long, enjoying it. I don't blame them.

Okay got some beta'ing to do, so best get to it. I just can't believe that stupid laptop of mine. How dare it go kaput now! Argh.

I am not amused!

Something will click; it has to. And there's so many of us sending you good vibes for a new job!

I got 3 years out of my extremely expensive Macbook Pro, so I think it's pretty standard. Sad, though :(

I'm sure many of them are designed to wear out at two years, yes, to force you to get a new one. Glad to hear you have backups.
Still wishing you the best of luck there! ♥

It seems to be the season for it! We've got three laptops at the computer repair shop (okay, so I cheated by dropping mine off the bed). Mum is without a computer at all, which is coming as a bit of a shock.

I had a serious panic with mine because I'd transferred all my photos onto my new external hard drive the night before then loaded it up onto my desktop computer, which told me that there was nothing there. Thought that, if they didn't manage to rescue my laptop, I would have lost all my photos from my trip :( But it worked second try, and they're now safely backed up on Windows Live as well.

So sorry the job search is frustrating. I checked out dropbox but I don't know how they function if it's free. I mean, server space costs money, so how does it operate?

Only a little bit of it is free--you can pay for more, or earn more by signing more people up via your account.

The job hunt SUCKS. 9.5 years of railroad research analyst does not translate to anything though the person I am working with at the temp agency believes my skills are very translatable. I still had to take all the tests, which I finished yesterday (got to do them at home).

Starting a new book now. That should help.

Everyone is being awesome, absolutely. I just know (as do you) too many others of our peeps who have been looking forever. It is disheartening, so much so. Not down and out yet, though.

That is not long enough! Tiff's little Macbook is five years and still going strong. She's gifting it to her friend Casey. I'll likely get another refurb off of Ebay. I don't do gaming or anything, so I just need a good solid computer to do the normal everyday stuff.

It is evil! It just went BOOM. I am quite annoyed especially as I haven't really moved it around much. Always back up! I learned that the hard way!!!

I am not sure this is worth fixing. I suspect not. Very irritating! And oops, dropping is not good. Yeah...I keep wondering if I should get a backup for my backup. And then a backup for that? LOL.

It is a smart, smart thing to do. I haven't lost anything because I have it everywhere else. Whew!

Honestly, the rate at which you seem to go through laptops, you might want to consider the Mac idea. I mean, which is more expensive, one $1100 computer that lasts 6 years, or 3 $500 computers that each last about 17 months?

I'm a big believer in belts and braces, so to replace the hard drive that died I only have to copy the data off everything else. (Which means, alas, buying *another* hard drive soon.)It's annoying, timeconsuming (copying 500GB from three different drives means a lot of juggling and waiting), but thankfully, that's all it is - I don't seem to have lost any data, much less vital data.

And I shall join the legions of 'try a Mac' - the average Mac laptop appears to be around five years of age (this is why people buy fewer of them) which makes them a better investment.

Good luck with the job hunt and I hope you find a good refurbished laptop. I've just ordered another IBM ThinkPad [ETA A secondhand, refurbished one, that is. Can't afford new!] and I'm hoping it's as good as the last one, which I used for not far off 10 years -- and it wasn't new when I bought it! :)

Admittedly I don't use a laptop much. It's either the desktop for serious work or the Asus Eee notebook for use while travelling, but I do like being able to write in other parts of the house and the Eee keyboard isn't big enough for fast typing.

That sucks :( It's one of the resons I love Dell, because they don't seem to have that obsolescence built in. My mum's is four years old and is in the shop for a problem with Office because we can't find the discs, Rick's is a refub and has a battery connection problem... mine got dropped. But my desktop is three years old and only getting replaced because it's not fast enough for Sims 3, and my dad's desktop is about six years old and still going as a word processor and email machine. They just keep going and going and going.
