It just occurred to me as I was sitting here staring mindlessly out the 35th floor window at The Unnamed Law Firm where I am currently working, that it has been ages since I've done a catch-up post. It is a quiet day here with two of the three lawyers gone, the baby associate probably staring out the window as much as I am (hey it is only 100 degrees! A lovely day!), though I've been helping out another attorney whose legal assistant is gone for some reason.

Easiest way to do a recap is, recap style! So here we go!

STATE OF ME: Hyper! Excited! A week from today I will be in London with [livejournal.com profile] cruentum!!! We will be in London several days, during which we will meet our HP and German friend [livejournal.com profile] catsintheattic along with a friend of hers. They are in the UK for the HP madness. I can't wait to meet Cats! We've been lj friends for a long, long time, and I've had the pleasure of beta'ing (how else does one spell that) many of her fics, HP and SPN. She's amazing and I can't wait to meet her. I'm doing very well, all healthy and everything though grumble, my mad quest to lose 10 lbs before seeing Nick again stalled out. Typical. Oh well, I am strong and healthy and should have no trouble w/wrestling with him. LOL.

STATE OF WORK/JOB HUNT: Still at La...oops, I mean The Unnamed Law Firm, still in the same position, still being told how amazing I am, blah blah blah...the person I am filling in for doesn't seem to like to do much work. Very interesting. I keep being told 'you never know what will happen' and several of the other legal secs have dropped by to tell me all three of my attorneys think highly of me. Okay I will so take that. I am just doing what I'm paid to do--and making damn sure I do it well, am nice to everyone, and smile tons. I do all that anyway.

Am not hunting for anything different right now. I'm committed to staying in this position until September, but if something else doesn't happen here by mid-September, I am going to have to make some decisions. The first tier of unemployment has to be used up by a certain date and so far I've only used just over half.

STATE OF THE PAST: I do not miss the other place anymore. I can honestly say, "I am over it." (Although, the rat bastard is still going to be a murder victim in a book...I swear it)

STATE OF READING: How did I ever live without my Kindle? Seriously. I adore this thing. Sure, the Nook and the Sony are fancier, do more things but what more do I need other than a lightweight, dependable, comfortable-to-read Kindle? My current read is FEED By Mira Grant. Zombies, and a damn scary world this story is set in. Oddly, I semi-read this way back when I first met my writing group peeps, but I pretty much skimmed it. I'd forgotten how to dig deep into a book and really READ. The Kindle has given me that pleasure back, so I snagged an ebook copy off of Amazon when it was on sale and now am truly reading it, letting myself be drawn into the world Grant has created. I can't recommend this author enough. What can be unique about a zombie story? Read FEED and find out. So. Damn. Good. The next one, Deadline, is out, and I likely will snag that for the trip though WHEEEEEEE Dance with Dragons is out on the 12th. YES YES YES YES YES!!! and on Kindle! Yes of course I have pre-ordered silly!

STATE OF THE BOOKS: ZOMG I am waaaaiiiittttinnnggggg!!!!! Editor has it again, I added the parts she wanted me to (and really? I rather hope she takes my suggestion of pulling them out). Been a long process so far--I turned it in in January and here it is July. Hopefully, I'll learn that the go-ahead has been given soon.

STATE OF SCHOOL: All signed up to take non-US history starting August 25th! Tues-Thursday nights which sadly interferes with my writing group. Dammit. But, still have Saturdays with Cid and Suz so that is good.

STATE OF WRITING: Wow. What an incredible few months this has been. My bb is now at 71,000 words, which is short for me, but that was my goal in doing this. I've never written a big bang before, but it has turned out to be a hugely positive experience not only in terms of getting a story written in a short amount of time (I mean, geesh, LWH took me three YEARS), writing something set in another country, writing something with some darkness worked in (though, honestly, I'm not sure how I did there...), and just writing something start to finish, focused entirely on the one story.

When I decided to join Nick in this madness, I'd never written anything like this, and didn't know a single soul other than him and [livejournal.com profile] misswinterhill and [livejournal.com profile] alba17. Now, thanks to Nick bravely starting an ongoing chat-and-write group open to ALL in the big bang (and then later, adding during the week for all in the Merlin fandom), I am surrounded by wonderful people who are my friends, fellow writers, and more. WOW. I made many good friends in the Torchwood fandom but I never really felt involved. Not like this, anyway. Writing a story myself, the chat fun on #paperlegends and #gsdmerlin on Mibbit, the hilarity of twitter and skype (need to do more of that) and taking on beta'ing a whole slew of people has absolutely added to the experience. It hasn't been about writing a story as much as opening up to new possibilities. I've learned so much! Not a moment of regret for taking a break and throwing myself into this wholeheartedly.

THAT'S ALL FOR NOW: My kids are off to Colorado to visit University of Colorado along with Dan, Colby, and one other...Tiff is considering applying there for grad school, and it is a possibility that somehow or other, Kelly could end up there too. He is doing fabulous in college now--totally aced biology this summer session. We'll see what happens but he is leaning toward biology as a major. Maybe. He still has time to decide.

So the next few days it is just me and the dogs, an empty house I plan to clean cuz as usual, it is a mess, and enjoy it staying that way for awhile. I'll be so busy getting ready for my trip. Two full weeks will be HEAVEN though there may be a small blip--may be flying to Germany for a couple of days unexpectedly. We'll find out later about that.

Should I shut up now? (can this count as my daily wordcount total?)

It's only eight more days!!! I can't wait! And it's such a miracle that this worked out for us, too. <3

SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Oh, and do you read non-fiction or docu-books, or only fiction? I'm currently reading a book about huskies, and I had to think of you. It's called The Cruelest Miles. The Heroic Story of Dogs and Men in a Race Against an Epidemic. As always with such books, the writing is medium at best, but the RL story is fascinating.

What made you decide to read the story of Balto (name corrected, oops) and the other dogs? :) Seriously--people who don't know huskies and say sledding is abusive just don't get how much these dogs love to run. (The running itself is not abusive but there are too many tragic stories of mushers who don't treat their dogs well...then there are people like Karen Ramstead her treat her dogs like gold). It was an amazing feat, definitely.

I like docu-books too, love documentaries, love well-told non-fiction... :)

And yes, SQUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes it IS amazing it has worked out! WOO!!!!!!

WAIT I did remember right, Togo did the first legs of the race, and is too-often ignored in tales but there are books about him too. Balto gets all the glory but he wasn't alone. :) Of course it is way impossible to believe my two would ever pull sleds but...they are spoiled. LOL!

I haven't covered that part yet - but I took a sneak peek, so I can confirm your memory on Balto and Togo!

My dad lent it to me. As a kid I love those documentary movies and books on the pioneers of the poles: Amundsen and Scott, Shackleton, and my dad has collected a lot of them. I still remember one black-and-white movie where Amundsen and Scott talked about what means to travel they would use. Scott said that he would take motor slides, ponies and dogs. And Amundsen answered: "I'm going to take dog, and dogs, and dogs." It sent shivers down my spine!

So I borrowed a book about Shackleton from my dad, which was absolutely amazing, and then he came up with this one.

I assume you've read it? :-)

MORE SQUEEEEE!!!!

I think the story of the epidemic is awesome when you take the time to realized just how primitive life in Alaska was back then. And how many native people were dying because white people introduced such overwhelming sickness.

Yea! for huskies and the human that cared for them (and still do).

(but I still like border collies better)(smiles @ Rosie)
