Today through Friday I am on vacation. I'm taking the last of what I have to spend on vacation with Nick. The internship finished up Monday--with a whimper. I am a little disappointed for Nick in that the prof who he was working for had to leave for personal reasons--a temporary thing, but right when Nick was there. As a result, Nick ended up running the perception lab (for which dozens of TCU students are grateful, so they could get their credits for participation) but also ended up NOT getting to have whatever experiences he might have had, had Hubbs been there. The Prof is super grateful to Nick (and he should be, growl) and says that there will be continued contact (and there should be, growl lol) but...
From a selfish person's standpoint, the prof's having to leave was a great thing. I didn't have to sit at home and mope while N was off doing psychology-stuff. LOL. But on the other hand...I hate that there were things missed out on. Heck we didn't even go to a football game.
And speaking of that which we didn't do...there were a lot of things I thought we would do, but didn't. We didn't go to a football game, (but we have been to pro basketball and baseball, so that is something). We didn't go to a single movie, go to any museums, go to a concert, didn't fly anywhere (THAT got messed up--lost money on that deal). We didn't...I don't know. There were probably other things.
But...
We did go to San Antonio and Austin twice, we did see So You Think You Can Dance, which was lots of fun, we saw a baseball game, we rescued a dog (Moonshadow has been adopted, btw--yay!). We read books and fanfic out loud (I drove, Nick read, lol). We drank LOTS of coffee and hot tea--became popular(tee hee) regulars at the Starbucks down the way from me that is on the close-list but is struggling to stay open anyway (so good so far).
We bought mice! Q, Andy, the Master and the Doctor--crazy little things. Shelby would LOVE to play with them...but no. Of course, now I have to take care of them myself, but oh well. They make me laugh.
We got to experience being robbed together...and as a result got to go SHOPPING for new computers (and we love our new computers! I should not thank robber boy, because dammit, he took Kelly's precious guitar...). Nick got a snazzzzzzyyyy new camera too, so he's going back to Germany with nice new toys.
We watched LOTS of John Barrowman: TW, Doctor Who, and of course the How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria (Canada) show he paneled -- FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC!!!! And of course had to go back and watch the search for Nancy (which fueled my Oliver love, which begat, in a way, sorta, one of my current wips), and the search for Joseph (theatre boys--maaaannn do they cry lots).
Fantastic fantastic fantastic. Yeah.
We also listened to lots of John Barrowman--yeah yeah, his singing can be cheesy, his acting even more so, but we love him. :)
We went to the ballet in Dallas!
We got to see friends--Shannon twice, walk the river through San Antonio, Nick and I sat in the Starbucks in downtown Austin and wrote on our computers (the old ones, before the robbery). Second time, we went to Austin and hit the famous Sixth Street, watched the college kids act like 'ho's and oh the testosterone levels on that street! Snort. We got to listen to music and have a couple of beers. We went to Cheesecake Factory...heh, we like that. Going again either tomorrow or Friday, not sure which yet.
We got to see Anthony
talekyn too, though our plans to see him later that weekend got foiled as he got sick. Sniff. But it was way fun to crash his hotel after the ballet, and then play the next day--he got to participate in Nick's experiments, and meet my doggies, and we enjoyed his flirting with our waiter at La Hacienda Ranch. Grin. Oh Anthony! :) Someday, some smart guy is going to realize what a treasure and amazing person you are and he will be the luckiest guy in the world.
We got to fall in love with a new writing fandom together (Torchwood, and okay it is Nick who is writing in it, but that's okay--I love seeing Nick get attention for his writing), we spent happy hours in every bookstore we came across...we cooked way cool things like Tex-Mex-German broccoli enchiladas (they are great! I love the German take on all things Mexican--weird, but delicious) and eat lots of pizza and hot pockets and McDonald's happy meals.
We spent lots of time with the dogs. Shelby is in much better shape for it too--walking at night (okay not all the time, but we DID get out there with them) and fun at the dog park. (Sigh, all that fur in my car!). Shelby is a 'ho, schmoozing it up with all the people in the park--she is pretty pretty pretty and very sweet and lol affection-demanding--she loves the dog park. Maddox, Nick figured out last night, just doesn't know how to play with other breeds of dogs, expecting them to play like Shelby does, so if there aren't any other huskies around, he seems a little lost.
What else? So much else. Just spending the day-to-day living hours with Nick the last three months, and the six weeks this past spring, has made 2008, despite the fact it has been a financially-hellish year (dental and medical and such), has been the best year, ever.
What's to come for us? Back to Germany on Saturday night for Nick, me walking around with my cell phone until I hear that he's safe in Hamburg, safe in Kiel, safe at his flat. Then back to our lives as they were before...though not really. You can't spend this much time living--successfully--with another person and be able to go back to how it was before.
So, we'll have a new way of doing things...and it will be good. And, I'll start eyeballing next summer for my return to Germany, and Nick will finish up those classes, start on the thesis, and then next year the exams...
Life will go on, and it is all good.

I hope that the time until you see each other again will be filled with good things to do and wonderful people to see, so that it won't feel that long.

Date: 2008-10-29 02:08 pm (UTC)A few years ago, a mother and father decided they needed a break, so they wanted to head out for a night on the town. They called their most trusted babysitter. When the babysitter arrived, the two children were already fast asleep in bed. So the babysitter just got to sit around and make sure everything was okay with the children. Later that night, the babysitter got bored and went to watch TV, but she couldn't watch it downstairs because they did not have cable downstairs (the parents didn't want children watching too much garbage). So, she called them and asked them if she could watch cable in the parent's room. Of course, the parents said it was ok, but the babysitter had one final request... she asked if she could cover up the angel statue outside the bedroom window with a blanket or cloth, at the very least close the blinds, because it made her nervous. The phone line was silent for a moment, and the father who was talking to the babysitter at the time said, "Take the children and get out of the house... we will call the police. We do not have an angel statue."
The police found all three of the house occupants dead within three minutes of the call. No angel statue was ever found.
