The two books I've sold were in first, it is how my brain works best, I 'need' that closeness to one central character to be happy. This third person thing all started because my editor wanted me to write in third, not first--like my first book for them. Mind you, it has done great, really well, there are other authors who write in first, no problem...but it is a personal thing to her, I suppose.
My mystery was in first as well. I didn't think twice about it back then, or with Red, either--and yet since selling Red, I've fought my natural inclination. I love third too, esp. for multiple POV (duh), but the stories I have now--none of them 'have' to be in third.
So yesterday, I spent 4-5 hours reworking Stage into first person. Suddenly, Gwion came alive for me in ways that the distance of third (no matter how 'close' I tried to get it) never has, never could.
Nick pointed out today that he's never seen me deep into the throes of writing before. We've known each other four years. That really makes me heartsick. No, the first 2 years especially, I was too caught up in other things (like, rediscovering self, yadda yadda) to 'need' writing...more time passed...then more...then I started to get interested in it again when Nick convinced me to join in on Seaside. That's been going on for about a year, longer actually...and then of course most of this year was with Nick.
So now here it is post-internship, and I am on my own again, with more time on my hands...and life settling down, got a 3rd person fic turned into my editor (who is very sick at the moment, which is not reassuring--she said selfishly)...oh you know the rest.
Exactly, and I've been fighting that forever--only because of everyone but my own's opinions. I am simply happiest writing in first, it is how my brain works best, so I am not going to fight it any longer.
