My son and I travelled to Alta Vista, Texas this weekend to get our puppy. The trip was very nice--it was wonderful to spend time alone with Kelly for a change. The weather held for us though we had some wonderfully dramatic skies. This rain we've been having is pretty unreal, and is expected to continue. A real pain for the dogs but their grass is thick and rich and that is awesome for them.
I promised to post some pictures of the puppy and will do so now behind the cut.
The bonding between the pup and the Springers has actually gone pretty well. We are THRILLED that the puppy and Claire were just sleeping together, the puppy stretched along Claire's back. This picture is kinda hard to see as the dogs blend into the couch, but you can tell, I think, if you look closely for Maddox's little face. The picture is sideways but hey, LOL. Oh well.

Okay here is Maddox in the car, sitting on Kelly's lap. He was absolutely fascinated with the air conditioner blowing in his face.

Mostly though, he just slept. And slept. And slept.

He didn't sleep the whole time though, so Kelly broke out one of the new toys.

And, Kelly took this to show off Maddox's eyes. One is brown, the other blue. This is not a fault in Huskies, is very common. It certainly adds to his attention-getting powers! We've been to Petsmart and to a fireworks warehouse with him, and both places he was so fussed over, the poor guy got overwhelmed.

Meeting the two big dogs went better than expected. Claire has been interesting to watch. She was wary at first, has done some lip curling and growling, and now seems to be taking on the Minding the Puppy role. This is fine--she is the Alpha in the house, and taking him under her paw is a good sign. I admit to being really surprised, though. Now she's sleeping with her head against his back. Freak out.
Scotty did exactly what we thought he would--he wanted to PLAY!!!! He forgets he is an old man. I can't help but wonder if the puppy will push him down the totem pole eventually. It will be interesting to watch as time makes the puppy grow up. Right now both accept him easily because (so I've been told) he is so very young and they can tell by his smell that he is an infant. The puppy kissed Claire and Scotty lots on the mouth, submissive behavior (and me and Kelly, too--a good thing--watch out Nick!), and is seemingly quite happy to be around Scotty. Scotty is on the left, Claire on the right on this picture, both checking out the puppy who just wiggles and wags and lays around, absolutely comfortable with both dogs.

He found that sitting beneath the coffee table is kinda like a cave. LOL he won't fit there forever but for now it is fun!

Poor little guy had never seen grass before. The rains we've been having made the lake on which the breeder lives flow over its banks, and it totally drowned the kennel and the yard. The dogs are having to be tied up outside the house with their puppies in a temporary area. It is very frustrating for the breeder. We stood on their back porch--look down, and the lake is right underneath, with turtles. They said they never thought they'd have fishing right off the back porch. Oh my! I'd never been in the hill country when it has been so green and beautiful. I really love this area and rather liked the town--there were deer EVERYWHERE, lounging around, fully aware they were safe. Pretty darn neat.
Anyway, this is Maddox on grass for the first time, with Scotty following after him.

He had a very rough night, missing his family badly. We are debating, now that he has bonded up with Claire and she seems to be keeping an eye on him, if tonight we should just keep him out of the crate and with her--in other words, IN MY ROOM!!!! Oh my gosh, he was supposed to live with KELLY!! But he wants to be with the dogs. Kelly is cool with that--we've both read alot about pack behavior and are realizing that our idea for how the dogs should be handled is, well, wrong. LOL.
So wish us luck tonight, see how we do. It should be interesting! He will be going to the vet in the morning for his first puppy-check-get-to-know-his-vet appointment. He's all up to date on his shots and such, the breeder sent us home with everything we needed plus his first heartworm tablet. So cool, huh.
Okay that is it for now. It has been a totally puppy weekend, without doubt. It has been awesome though--I'm really glad we added him to our, um, Pack. LOL!
One last pic of him and Kelly last night, on the couch upstairs. (The back cushion is off to make more room for him and the pup).

Date: 2007-07-02 05:11 am (UTC)Hey, with the sudden change in what program I'm teaching for the company, it looks almost 100% (let's say 98% to be safe) that I actually will be back in Dallas this fall. So you know what that means! As soon as I know for sure that I'm headed that way and what the dates are ... we have to make plans! I would like to meet you and Kelly for dinner someplace, and maybe get a chance to see more of Dallas-FW than I did last time. If I can arrange it to be there for a weekend, I certainly will!
