I just spent the last hour watching this cat's videos (mugumogu). With all the swine flu nonsense (my city's school--80k students--closed until May 8th because of PARENTAL PRESSURE and ONE flu case...so far my son's ISD is not following suit) I decided to find something that made some sort of sense.

Apparently not. Granted, as has been pointed out to me, there is a regular flu vaccine and there isn't a swine flu vaccine, so it is probably not stupid to be cautious but closing down the schools due to one case is questionable.

I think the reasoning has an undertone here. FW is over 50% hispanic, we're close to Mexico...the one case is a kid who goes to a predominantly Mexican school... Get the picture, eh? Yeah.

But, San ANtonio is even MORE so on all counts and last I heard has not closed.

It is true that you guys probably have the most to fear, but I do wonder how much is semi-conscious racism. Like the swine flu is going to spontaneously erupt out of those filthy Mexicans. Even when they haven't been around people who are actually in Mexico.

Exactly. I can't shake that thought either.

That kind of attitude pretty much burns me as the Mexican people I know, whether born here or not, are nice, very hard-working people. I worked for a lawyer once and all her clients were Mexican--she loved them as they always paid their bills, weekly even, and in cash. She never had to pressure any of those clients. I liked that lawyer a lot. Cant' remember her name...

My co-worker who is Mexican--and born here, as were his parents--really resents when people assume he wasn't.
