I am such a copycat. Whisked off of [livejournal.com profile] cruentum's lj (and you guys should pepper him with pesky questions. He could use the distraction from studying glucocorticoid neurotoxicity).

MEME TIME!!!

Ask me one fandom-related question, or non-fandom related because well I've only written 2 TW fics, in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.

Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts.

Question can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. Whatever you want.

Should Andy become a TW member?

Sorry dear Andy, but no. I have to trust Gwen's judgment--there is something he just doesn't have, and when she told him no, she would never recommend him for Torchwood, she meant it.

I do wish she'd been more specific, because there is nothing obvious in what we know of Andy that would make him unsuitable for Torchwood.

Maybe he isn't messed up enough.

(Should it scare me that I knew she said that? And which episode? Meep.)

I think he's too trusting.

I had a two cats. I used to put saran wrap across the hallway and then call them by shaking the cat treat can. Then they'd run into the saran wrap.

The first cat stopped coming when i shook the can almost immediately. The second one still does it about ten years later.

I should rename that cat Andy.

Yeah. Too trusting--so he would, or could at any moment, run into that saran wrap. Torchwood can't have that kind of (sorry Andy) dumb behavior.

You crack me up, doing that to your kitties...

I like to think Jack and Gwen would actually put cellophane wrap across the hallways.

Jack: ANDY! FRONT AND CENTER! WE HAVE A SITUATION!
Gwen: *giggle snort*
Andy: *runs into cellophane* OH NOT AGAIN. I HATE YOU GUYS.
Ianto's Ghost: That's fucking hysterical.
Jack: I know! Ghost-Ianto, you have the best ideas.

Just gave you #22? :)

I do feel a little lost without something to freak out over. I miss working on Gulls. Seriously miss it. Sigh.

This is a cool meme.

Also, when you write, anything, really, do your characters ever take you by surprise?

What does a story need to make you want to get into the fandom for it? Or at least interact in some way in the fandom for it, I mean.

My question to you: do you love me, now that I can dance?

If you could go on vacation w/ George, Mitchell and Annie, where would you go? Money and time are not a hindrance here.

Oh yeah they do take me by surprise, but that doesn't seem to happen until I hit that comfort-zone with them. I've had stories that I swear were written by a character and not me (Red was like that). It happens more with me though, or maybe I just let it happen more, when I write first person.

I would be sad if things I never planned on stop happening because a character insisted. That's really what makes writing by the seat-of-the-pants so much fun to me (and why I failed so miserably at extensive outlines).

Good to see you!

Did you see Nick's tweet today about Savage Garden, a song that Darren Hayes recorded and sang and someone made a video for it? THAT is what got me into that fandom, that video, that song, the circumstances of the two guys breaking up (which was very much a part of my Red). I'd never written or considered writing RPS before, but that video? Yeah.

Good thing I got into it too. I'd never have met Nick otherwise.

As for Torchwood, my involvement in Torchwood happened only because of Nick. And even then, it took about a year of his involvement for me to feel a part of it (and not be just N's g/f). That didn't happen until afer the Ask!World desocking. And, really, also because of Blue, the first person outside of Nick's immediate circle (the Ask!world peeps, Torchwood_House peeps lol) who became a real friend all my own. Everyone else I got through Nick. (No complaints about that mind you!).

See mah reply to Jenny. You bet your socks I love you, whether or not you dance a single step!

Oh wow, with a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire? LOL. We'd have to go RIGHT after the full-moon--wouldn't do to have George be a threat in a foreign country though lol I guess Mitchell is always a threat--but, oddly--the world used to feel so unattainable to me and now it really doesn't. Europe doesn't, anyway. But there are parts I know I will never see...such as parts of Russia, Romania, Nepal would be awesome--I would love to go somewhere so different and unusual from anything I've ever seen, but fun and beautiful so we could have fun with that and screech over the food. Okay me and George anyway...

So it's special reasons each time. I was wondering because I've been speculating for myself -- what draws me into a fandom.

Did you ask Nick this? It is a good question! What draws YOU into a fandom?

Really, I am not kidding that I was pulled into TW kicking and screaming, with NO desire to be involved.

But that was before I came to know people like you. :)

I UNDERSTAND NOW!

I... if I have a sense of connection and belonging. I don't think I'm really "in" Merlin as a fandom. I love to read Merlin stories, but I'm not talking to people in Merlin fandom who I didn't already know from TW. I feel like I have a place to belong in TW fandom and that will keep me in it. Though I do get the sense that we've (as a group of friends) transcended "fandom" as our common bond, and we have bonds that go beyond Barrowman, or Torchwood, or whatever.

I like some modes of fic more, I think. I like stories where there's characters in a a relationship who have complementary strengths and weaknesses, so that they can support each other in times of need. I don't like unbalanced relationships. That sense of balance tends to happen more in magical or supernatural universes, I think. IDK.

Your second paragraph smacks personally.

I have that NOW. So yeah, I too really like that--in real life and in fiction--just love the way you actually put it.

You, too (and dog.)

I agree with the idea that the characters write the story. I just always wanted to find out if that's the same for other people :).
