To All My Vampire Friends...

Okay...

As some of you know, that darn vampire kit has lodged into my mind and will not let go. The big problem with this thing, is that I am not a vampire fan, and so know very little about the creatures.

I like them well enough...I am absolutely in love with Bill (TRUE BLOOD) for instance, but I never watched Angel (I might though--but then again, maybe I won't so I won't be influenced by him lol), I wallbanged Twilight (is Edward REALLY a vampire? I wonder), I've not read anything but Interview with a Vampire and not sure that counts...okay so I did read Dracula years ago, but I assume times have changed, and, well, vampirism is something I've never really sunk my teeth into.

It will NOT be a romance, TYVM. My POV is not going to fall into the arms of her dark love...uh...no thanks.

So...

What do YOU guys like in your vampires? And dislike, too--like sparkles. Sparkly vampires do not do a thing for me.

Vampire dislikes: Sparkles, corrupting their weaknesses, vampires that are always horrifying looking, vampires that are "too" powerful

Vampire likes: Vampires that don't "change," vampires that can conceal their nature (but maybe it's difficult), can't go out in sunlight without consequences, killed by decapitation, fire, stakes to the heart, aka Ye' Ol' Standards

In general, I like for there to be pros and cons to being a vampire. One of the things I really like about the Whedon vampires is that when they're turned they don't do a lot of growing as people. They may make a few changes, like to style or speech, but their core personalities remain the same, even over hundreds of years and it's because they literally can't change; becoming a vampire stripped them of that ability.

I also like for there to be some thought to vampire physiology. As long as it's consistent in a universe, I'll probably swallow most of it, however vampire babies or anything else with a vampire being able to give life to someone seems wrong to me. I can kind of be down with vampire circulation that isn't controlled by the heart, but um, sometimes I have problems with that, too.

I'm a big fan of vampires being totally effed-up and not seeing any moral issues, so like, sex with mommy is on! I don't like seeing sex with mommy, but you get the point I think. Warped senses of morality are cool, though. Just, it doesn't make sense to me if a vampire is evil because it's the evil thing to do. I like it better when there's a warped sense of reasoning in there (which, okay, this is actually about characters in general, actually).

Um, I could babble about vampires more, if you like. ;)

Thank you, Em! You've given me some great things to think about. Including physiology...no bebes, no life-giving, I agree with that. Vampire circulation though--I wouldn't mind suggestions that you can buy in a vampire.

As for my vampire, what you are describing is the direction I am leaning toward...a warped sense of reasoning. That will play a big role I think in dealings with my female character (dang it, I really do need to name her). The storyline I have in mind definitely will make a perfect vehicle for such a character. I envision him very much alone, his kind on the endangered species list... Hmmm...

More more...this is extremely helpful. And lol I really am tempted to write this prior to Lee's story.

vampires that don't 'change' -- are you saying no shapeshifting vampires? I am not a fan of flying, bat-winged vamps myself...besides if mine could, he would possibly not need my character at all. LOL.

A crippled vampire...let's see, wasn't there one in the Angel series...a weak vampire. lol. Vague memories...
