Okay...
As some of you know, that darn vampire kit has lodged into my mind and will not let go. The big problem with this thing, is that I am not a vampire fan, and so know very little about the creatures.
I like them well enough...I am absolutely in love with Bill (TRUE BLOOD) for instance, but I never watched Angel (I might though--but then again, maybe I won't so I won't be influenced by him lol), I wallbanged Twilight (is Edward REALLY a vampire? I wonder), I've not read anything but Interview with a Vampire and not sure that counts...okay so I did read Dracula years ago, but I assume times have changed, and, well, vampirism is something I've never really sunk my teeth into.
It will NOT be a romance, TYVM. My POV is not going to fall into the arms of her dark love...uh...no thanks.
So...
What do YOU guys like in your vampires? And dislike, too--like sparkles. Sparkly vampires do not do a thing for me.

Date: 2008-12-11 04:51 am (UTC)IMO they are pretty much played out in the media. Anne Rice was on the money with one line in The Vampire Lestat: "Everybody's sick of Count Dracula." That being said, I found Anne Rice's own vampire novels to be overrated and boring. The only parts I bothered reading were the beginning and end when Lestat was a rockstar; inbetween I just looked for how many mentions of The Savage Garden I could find, LOL.
I loved the vampires on Buffy before the show jumped the shark; I enjoy (not necessarily love) Bill on True Blood too. Why? Because he's different. He has both vampire and human traits, because vampires were human at one point. That scene where he pseudo-scares the little kids by putting pizza crusts in his fangs was my fave so far.
Can't comment much on Twilight as I'm not that familiar with it. Perhaps that's a good thing.
Now for likes and dislikes. I strongly dislike "stereotypical" vampires i.e. garlic kills them, sunlight kills them, no reflection, blah blah. Oh, and all vampires are evil and out for your blood. Yawn.
Likes: the dark romantic aspect, as long as it brings something new to the table. I love the idea of living at night, since IRL, I, well, do, LOL. I know you said your novel won't be a romance, but romance, or rather romanticism, seems to be a big part of vampirism to me. Individuality. Personality. Just like with human characters.
If you want some good ideas, I recommend, if you're not familiar with it already, to go to the True Blood subsite on HBO's website. That Nan character pretty much says it all.
