I have to go buy ANOTHER copy of Word 2007. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME!

The first was stolen by The Little Jerk Thief, and the second, well--I have ripped my room and desk apart, and fail to find it, ANYWHERE!!!

So I will buy another. A third. That is ANOTHER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS!!!!! I have tried to deal with Wordperfect, which I love, but it doesn't talk with Word 07 very well, and I have Word 03 at work, and and and... I am frustrated! And my son really really needs it for the next semester. He's made do without it but really needs Powerpoint at home.

So. I give. Merry Christmas to me...this is what I'll spend my Christmas bonus on, I suppose.

Whee.

C, shivering in bed with Maddox at my feet, rereading old writing, and resurrecting one of them

Ever tried Open Office? It's free! :D

Eric loaded OpenOffice onto this laptop for me, and mostly it does what I want it to -- but formatting gets wonky when I save it as a word file ... and I don't think OpenOffice, at least not the version I have, has anything like powerpoint.

Find Little Jerk Thief, and feel free to use a couple of those fence planks on him that you're theoretically saving for me.

LOL that was my experience in the past with Open Office and why I have been reluctant to use it. And, since I move between three computers, it is frustrating to have to deal with. I can't exactly put Open Office on my work computer, after all.

And of course one has to have the converter installed to talk to word 2003 (which is what I have at work). Imagine, creating an upgrade that is incompatible with the previous version? That's what they did.

(If I get it again, which I probably will--we can stick it on your laptop when you are here).

We shall have to investigate that possibility .... in less than 24 hours!

yeah--call me soon as you get in town. Kelly has driver's ed 2-4, so not sure how that will mess with your schedule, but we'll figure it out. You might want to relax a bit once you drive to your hotel--then when I am done with him, we can meet downtown and prance about and eat something and such!

it will be festive!!

I'll swing by the hotel and see what's what -- I'm not sure I can check in so early (flight lands around 11am), but I can at least see where it is and what's around, and who knows maybe they will have a room I can check into that early! But I will certainly call once I'm on the ground and we can make cunning plans ....

oh that early! Okay then well bring your laptop and we can enjoy writerly moments in the afternoon while the boy does his driver's ed thing, lol. B&N is right by driver's ed. Can park there and work around him. Sometimes, they drive them home but i doubt i'd be so lucky. :)

Hehehehehe. Not that I don't like the boy, mind you. But we'll get more writing done if he's not around. *smirk*

well, i just have to have him to the place at 2 and picked up at 4....so...basically...you could meet me at B&N around 2, then when he is done I can pick him up and take him home, leaving yuo at the bookstore, then come back, resume mad crazy writing brilliance, then when we get sick and tired of that, we can go eat somewhere. I insist we go downtown though, and tromp around, as it will be lovely. Then you can go back to your hotel for the night, I go home....then next day, again! Except this time he has to be there at 12. Grin.

We've only been working on this a year and a bit, you know...I just think they shove kids on teh road too soon these days. 17 is plenty young enough to start navigating the madness. But he HAS to have it done before the end of the year, so we're barely making it. WOOT!

My flight from Omaha is 6:55am, so I don't know if I'll check in the morning, but if I don't see your message tonight, I'll call you when I land and we can sort out directions ... the car rental place ought to be able to help me.

Sadly, yes. Most of the courses my company runs are done by an instructor on a stage in front of a couple of dry-erase boards. Mine is the only one currently that runs with powerpoint. The problem is, more and more hotels are having difficulty maintaining the size boards we need, so it looks like all of our classes will go to powerpoint soon.

Don't know if it's too late to change your mind on the purchase, but I'll add another recommendation for OpenOffice. I'm all about the free stuff! I think they have something comparable to Powerpoint in their suite now. But, if they don't, Google Documents has a "Presentation" document type that's similar to Powerpoint. (And, that too is free!)

I tried Googledocs and found it a nightmare, at least their word processing. It just totally messed things up (and not just for me). Which was sad, as that sure would be easier than toting my little thumb drive everywhere. Ah well. I have to consider my son's needs as well, and what they use at his school.

Dang it--I need to get into teh shower. LATE!

Er, why not download NeoOffice? It's free. (OH WAIT, for PC users that is actually Open Office, indeed, as my predecessors have stated; NeoOffice is the same, but for Mac.) Why give Gates another cent?

I do have it-- I haven't checked the powerpoint clone. Or if they have that--that's what my son needs.

If there was a way to rip 07 off my laptop and put it on the big computer, I definitely would.

(maybe someone here knows how...)

Take a deep breath and search your study again before you do anything rash.

Open Office *does* have a PowerPoint equivalent - I've done a presentation on it, and it plays nicely with PowerPoint proper.

In the past, I've had good luck with buying from eBay, but I suspct that the dangers of buying M$ products from there are greater.

Also, if your son is in full-time education, you should be able to get an educational copy - this might not eat your Christmas bonus after all.

If I could figure out how to rip it from my laptop to the big computer, I would do that. LOL I have cleaned this room so many times...it is aggravating as I *always* kept the CD with the case. It is not there now. One kid is a Mac user so she is safe, the other is the one who needs it--neither of them have it. It is frustrating.

I'll look for the Powerpoint clone. Thanks!

Lot of people seem to--I did download it but had used it several years ago and wasn't that happy with it...I'm sure they've updated since then, too. I'll take a look at it more seriously tonight.

I am mostly mad I lost the disk... but do prefer both computers to have the same program. I like Word 07 (now). It is too cute for words.

You know, you may want to take your son with you with his student ID... back when i bough Office, they had a student and teacher's edition, which was the same thing but significantly cheaper, and hubby just needed to show his ID.
